Carmella Uranga wearing the Hammerhead Helmet, Paris, July 2014
This artwork revisits George Stratton’s experiences with perceptual adaptation, with a contemporary slant, exploring binocular rivalry. Our two eyes always look in the same direction and focus on the same object. But today we are often obliged to focus on task and environment simultaneously, as when we text while walking down the street. The Cyclops helmet proposes a solution for multi-taskers: a large central eye takes in a wide-angle view of the scene around, while the other eye focuses diagonally downwards on a point where hands is occupied with a task.
